112. Using Data to Understand Your Church

The Insights tab in YouVersion Connect is your church’s analytics dashboard. This data is meant to be a pastoral tool showing you what your church resonates with, questions they’re asking, and how you can bridge the gap through sermon and small group content.

How Churches Use This

Start by reviewing a few foundational metrics: Follower counter, Post engagement, and Plan data. Bring YouVersion Connect data into your team meetings at a monthly cadence. Use that data to inform your Featured Plan selection based on length, topic, and style.

Build a quarterly report with data points that show engagement trends, Followers, Plan completion, and comparisons between sermon series. Use that report alongside other metrics like attendance and small group participation to have a holistic view of church health.

Here are a few specific use-cases:

  • Monthly check-in. Your communications director pulls up YouVersion Connect during the monthly staff meeting. They share that Wednesday Posts consistently see more engagement than Monday Posts. The team decides to shift their posting schedule.
  • Series Comparison. After your fall sermon series, you compare this year’s Plan engagement to last year’s. Completion rates are up 15%. You note that this year you promoted the Plan during your sermon every Sunday—a change that clearly made a difference.
  • Pastoral conversation. Your small group pastor notices that Plans with Friends engagement drops off after week two in most groups. They create a Post encouraging people mid-Plan to continue until the end and ask leaders to check in with their group.

Calvary Chapel in Fort Lauderdale, FL has found that data helps them listen to what people need. “When we see trending searches across campuses—things like anxiety, prayer, grief, or marriage—that data becomes a pastoral signal. The data isn’t just about measuring what we’ve done—it’s about listening to what our people need next.”

Operational Guidance

  • Who owns this? The person responsible for your Church Page strategy, with regular reporting to other church leaders.
  • Frequency: Quick check-ins weekly (5 minutes), deeper monthly reviews (15-20 minutes), and a quarterly comprehensive analysis.
  • Preparation needed: Access to YouVersion Connect and basic familiarity with the dashboard.

Best Practices

  • Look for patterns, not perfection. A Post that gets 200 views isn’t “better” than one that gets 150. But, if Scripture-focused Posts consistently outperform Posts promoting an event, that’s a pattern worth paying attention to.
  • Share insights with your team. Data is most useful when it informs group decisions, not just living in one person’s head.
  • Use data to celebrate. When you see strong engagement, tell your team and your church! Celebration drives more engagement.
