113. Measuring Engagement: Healthy Metrics for Discipleship

Data in YouVersion Connect is meant to serve as markers for how well your discipleship efforts are serving your church. Use the metrics to serve your people and guide how you serve them.
Key Principles for Healthy Measurement
- Trends Over Snapshots. A single week’s data tells you very little. A three-month trend tells you a lot. Don’t react to one low-engagement Post—look at whether your engagement is generally growing, holding steady, or declining over time.
- Participation Over Performance. The question isn’t, “How many people completed the Plan?”, it’s, “Are people engaging with Scripture in ways they weren’t before?” A church where 50 people consistently read together as a healthier discipleship culture than one where 500 people start a Plan and only 20 finish.
- Context Over Comparison. Your church is unique. Your size, location, demographics, culture, and history all shape your engagement patterns. Pay more attention to your church’s unique needs than how your data compares to another church’s.
- Questions Over Answers. The best thing data can do is raise questions worth exploring. Look for questions like, “Why do shorter Plans work better for our church?” or “Why did engagement spike during our prayer series?” These questions lead to pastoral conversations, team learning, and better strategy.
- Celebration Over Critique. When you see growth, even if it’s small growth, celebrate it publicly. It validates the effort, encourages the community, and motivates others to join in next time.
What to Measure (and What to Ignore)
What to Measure
- Follower growth over time: Is your church’s reach expanding?
- Post engagement consistency: Are you maintaining a steady rhythm?
- Plan start-to-completion ratio: Are the Plans you select the right length and topic?
- Campaign-to-campaign comparison: Are you improving over time?
- Engagement during vs. between campaigns: Do you have a baseline rhythm, or does engagement only spike during campaigns?
What to Ignore
- Absolute members in isolation: 500 Followers means nothing without context. Is that 10% of your church or 90%?
- Daily fluctuations: A Post that gets 50 views one day and 80 the next isn’t a trend.
- Comparison to unrelated churches: Another church’s numbers should not affect your strategy.
- Vanity metrics: Follower count without engagement is just a number on a screen.
Best Practices
- Review data monthly, act quarterly. Check in regularly, but make strategic changes on a quarterly cycle to avoid overreacting.
- Always ask “why” before “what next”. Understand what’s driving the numbers before changing your approach.
- Hold data loosely. Data informs decisions—it doesn’t make them. Pastoral wisdom, prayer, and relational knowledge always have the final word.
